Traveling Bug

For most people the idea of traveling is the very thing that gets them through school, work, or life. Knowing that eventually all that work will be spent exploring and living in a place you never have before is extremely exciting to a large number of people. Well, the idea sounded great to me. As someone who has never grown up traveling I liked the idea of going to new places. Even places that were just in the US. I did a little bit of traveling when I was in high school. But it was always a short school trip and usually I had a family member with me. The times I do remember traveling were always fun and I never remember having any issues. Fast forward to this last week. I had this Colorado trip planned for awhile. There were about a thousand reasons why I wanted to go to Colorado. Needless to say I was very excited. Except, the morning I woke up to board the plane I got sick. I woke up early and started vomiting profusely. If you know me at all, you know that vomiting is unfortunat...

MODELING 101

Welcome to your first class in Modeling 101.  In this blog post I want to explore topics related to how to start modeling. While also being able to give some advice for new and upcoming models in the industry. Modeling is becoming more attainable than ever before and I really believe that. When people around me find out I model they often come to me with a lot of questions that tell me just how much the industry is stereotyped. Some of these include, "Oh I wish I could model but I am 5+  pounds overweight" or "I do not look like a model." Sometimes these statements confuse me. Like what do you mean you don't look like a model? What does a model look like? Because I know certainly that by all traditional standards I don't necessarily look like a model either. Now what makes me a model is my massive portfolio or continuous hard work in the industry and on social media. But then doesn't that mean that anyone could model? Well, yeah basically. So my first...

My Confidence Journey

It is funny for me to think that there was a time when I was not so confident in my skin. To a point, I believe everyone is a little insecure no matter how confident they claim to be. Throughout my middle school and high school years I got enough attention to have confidence and sometimes I felt like I was. But for the most part I only felt confident less than half the time. I did not like how most clothes looked on me. I felt at a loss for my own personal style which made shopping for clothes that did look good much harder. I often felt in between styles and could not find looks that fit me. Not to mention, I had a baby face which would be great down the line but not at the time. It made me look years younger so it was hard to pass as a high schooler. I never looked my age in social settings. That felt damaging to my image in high school. Additionally, I never liked to go out without a little bit of makeup. Just so people would not say anything about my age or how young I looked. Of c...

Professionally Creepy

Good morning!! I woke up today trying to think of all the topics I had been mulling over the last few days. I kept coming up blank with the exception of this one idea. Perhaps my most underdeveloped so far but we will just go with it. Creepy photographers are more relevant than I would like to give thought to. Usually its a male photographer and usually there are multiple red flags beforehand. I have always been cautious and tried to follow my gut feeling about shoots. Which has resulted in a handful of photographers getting confronted and even canceled on by me. But it can be hard to draw the line when trying to be professional. I wanted to lay out as many red flags as I can possibly think of in this post. In addition I wanted to be able to give some advice for how to handle the situation in case you're actually in it. RED FLAGS: 1) The first one I can think of is if they are brief or vague when explaining what they are looking for in the photoshoot. Some photographers like...

NEW MODEL TIPS

As a new model it can be hard to determine what is acceptable treatment in the industry and what is not appropriate. I remember first beginning modeling and thinking that the photographer had so much authority and control. I was always scared to say no and was terrified to insert my opinion in the conversation. Thinking I did not know what was best or was too inexperienced.  Inexperienced I may have been but there were plenty of times that a photographer asked me to do something I did not think was best or was uncomfortable with. But many times in the beginning I went with it anyway. Fearing that the photographer would ruin my newly forming reputation before it even had the chance. I would like to emphasize that no single photographer holds this kind of control. If one photographer does not like you or decides to spread rumors about you it does not affect your career as a whole if at all. Not everyone is going to want to work with you in this industry or even like the work you do...

Anxiety and Success Part 1

I would like to start with a disclaimer. I am not an anxiety expert though I have lived with anxiety for most of my life.  I remember the day in high school when i learned what an “Anxiety Disorder” was.  I finally felt like I had a name for the disgusting feeling that seemed to plague my daily life. When I was in high school my anxiety took place in the form of dating and relationships. I would let these things dictate my decisions and my successes. Throughout high school I was told that my anxiety would lessen as I got older. Which made what came next that much worse. Upon entering college my anxiety disorder developed into an eating disorder as well. So now I felt nauseous all the time and would throw up anything I ate. I remember my college doctors trying to throw whatever antidepressants they could at me. Which continuously messed up my anxiety and eating disorders further. I remember feeling hopeless and depressed for the first time in my life. Did I really have to liv...

Clothing and Modeling

When I first began modeling I remember throwing all my clothes in a pile. I went through them very carefully and would set aside ones that I deemed good enough to be in photoshoots. What I ended up with was a huge pile of basic clothing. Meaning I had an access of black/neutral tank tops, black/blue jeans, and white shirts. This was a good start. You can layer and use a lot of looks with the same basic pairings. After doing this I knew I would need access to a lot clothes for my modeling career. The problem? Why money of course. As a college student my money goes to a lot of different places. Mainly right into my mouth. But I have to sustain life somehow. I needed to find a way to come up with clothing on the low. I did this in three different ways. First, my favorite store became anything with the word "thrift" in it. The art of thrifting is a time consuming one. In order to find all the cool and trendy things you may have to spend some hours on the racks. This used to be ...
